Monero is a fully open-source cryptocurrency that focuses on fungibility, privacy, and decentralization. It uses an obfuscated public ledger, so anybody can broadcast or send transactions, but no outside observer can tell the source, amount, or destination.

Staying away from the wars of the fans, in our small, we believe that Monero is currently the best cryptocurrency focused on privacy and decentralization. In short, beyond the speech concerning the deep web and factual shady actions, Monero is absolutely the currency that can guarantee you the best possible privacy.

That said, let’s see how it is possible to install the official Monero graphic wallet on a Linux system and how to verify its authenticity and integrity by checking the hash of the downloaded images.

Installation and verify the official Monero graphic portfolio on a Linux system

In this video, we show you how to download and verify the Monero GUI wallet. The GUI wallet is used to securely store your Monero cryptocurrency and is what you need to check your balance, send and receive crypto coins. The Monero daemon is the middle agent between the Monero network and the wallet, it is working in the background and you don’t need to mind about it.

The GUI wallet provides a nice user interface, adaptable to all kinds of users, but it is especially recommended for less technical people who want to quickly send and receive XMR. You can download the latest version available of the Monero software, as well as hardware, light, and mobile wallets, from the official website: https://web.getmonero.org/downloads/.

In the video, we show you how to use Simple Mode. Created for less technical users who only want to use Monero in the easiest and quickest way possible. Open the wallet, automatically connect to a remote node, send/receive XMR, and check your balance.

You are strongly advised to verify the hashes of the archive you downloaded. This will confirm that the files you downloaded perfectly match the files uploaded by the Monero development workgroup. Please don’t underestimate this step, a corrupted archive could result in lost funds.

Always verify your downloads!

You can find the official guide to verify binaries on Linux, Mac, or Windows command line, at this address: https://web.getmonero.org/resources/user-guides/verification-allos-advanced.html. We showed you the entire process in the video. To protect the integrity of the binaries the Monero team provides a cryptographically signed list of all the SHA256 hashes.

On Linux, you can download the signed hashes file by issuing the following command:

$ wget -O hashes.txt https://getmonero.org/downloads/hashes.txt

After the verification process, you can proceed to install the Monero GUI wallet.

Extract the downloaded package, open the extracted folder, and, for the first time, click on monero-wallet-gui or launch it from the terminal:

$ ./monero-wallet-gui

After the first launch, the Monero software provides you a system-wide launcher, so you can launch the Monero wallet directly from your Linux application launcher.

In case that you change the location of the Monero application folder after the first launch, remember to update the location into the .desktop file.

$ vim /home/<user-name>/.local/share/applications/monero-gui.desktop

And modify this line:

Exec=/home/<user-name>/Downloads/monero-gui-v0.15.0.4/monero-wallet-gui %u

With the updated path:

Exec=/opt/monero-gui-v0.15.0.4/monero-wallet-gui %u

We used the /opt location in the example above.

Now, you’re settled to use the most advanced cryptocurrency in privacy. Test your wallet, send and receive XMR, check your balance, use a remote node, or a full downloaded one. Enjoy it.
